Thomas Debbink, Tiffin: technology and globalization, on the agenda of strategy professors

Technological changes and the globalization process are among the most relevant tendencies studied by strategy professors, according to Thomas Debbink, professor at the Tiffin Executive MBA.

Two of the most important tendencies in strategic management are technological changes and the globalization process. For instance, cost structure is changing in Asia, while salaries are constantly on the rise. Cost structure is suffering compared to Europe and America: at the same time, we are witnessing developments in African industry”, says Thomas Debbink, strategy professor at the Tiffin Executive MBA, where he teaches strategic management. Ghana, for example, is one of Africa’s stable countries. “If we look at the intentions of Wal-Mart, Pepsi or Coca-Cola, we will see that Africa represents a growing market and one of the aspects we are concerned with is the rising number of consumers there.”

Before working at Tiffin University, Prof. Debbink PhD worked for the Delphi Chassis division at General Motors, where he performed activities related to production, quality control and engineering, employee administration and acquisitions. Among his tasks were employee supervision, plant management, including the responsibility for authorizing capital and operational expenditures and the improvement of production and quality systems for a variety of suppliers in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Finland and Germany.

The purpose of the strategy course is to enable students to integrate what they studied in other courses. We talk about the financial aspects of a company in a mix of marketing and finance. The strategy of the course is holistic and encompasses all the aspects of a company”, Thomas Debbink says.
